Quiet Saturday night February 23, 2008

I’m home tonight on a Saturday, watching movies and catching up on some work. I go out a lot during the week and on most Fridays, but I prefer to stay home on Saturdays unless I really have something specific planned. All of the premium movie channels show new movies on Saturday nights, and I’ve usually saved quite a few to watch from the past week as well. Right now I’m watching ‘Champion’, and later tonight I’m planning to see ‘Michael Clayton’, ‘Ordinary People’, and the rest of ‘Rendition’.
I used to use NetFlix, but I switched to Blockbuster Online a while ago since I have 2 local stores nearby to take advantage of their in-store trades. Blockbuster increased its rates a while ago, and if they increase them again, I might switch back to NetFlix. I was never displeased with NetFlix, but I couldn’t resist trying Blockbuster Online for a while. Netflix even made canceling so easy that my queue is still available for me to restart my access. I’d definitely have no problem returning to NetFlix.
My boyfriend Chris is considering some job offers and the most attractive one is in Atlanta. He said that me being here in Erie puts a real wrench into that idea, and he asked if I’d be willing to move there with him. I really don’t want to move, but it was great that he asked. Sometimes I question how much I mean to him, but I must mean a lot if he’d ask me to move there and is considering our relationship so much in this decision. I’m hoping he’ll stay or accept one of the offers closer to home, but if he ultimately decides to leave, I’ll understand. I’ll feel really lousy about it for a while, but I’ll know he considered me in the decision. Anything could happen at this point so I’m trying not to think about it too much, but it has been on my mind.
My inconsiderate next door neighbor is moving…yay! She’s very nervy, her visitors are rude, and her son is a bratty pre-teen. Other than that, I love them both…ha ha. It will be so nice not to have my driveway blocked anymore!
Another one of my co-workers is leaving so two of our problem employees will have both left within a short period of time. This should free us up of some of the dead weight and allow us to replace them with some quality people.
So lately, things have been going my way. I’m a little hesitant to wonder how long this luck will last.

Half of our office has moved for a variety of reasons, some to other areas within the building, and some for new employment elsewhere. I must admit it’s actually kind of nice since it’s quieter and we’re no longer stepping on each other. I’ll definitely see those who moved to other areas of the building so that’s OK too.
I just bought a Western Digital Passport Drive. I’m really happy with it, but I think I should have bought a larger capacity drive – or at least the red model. Maybe I’ll buy one in red once they bump the capacity up to 350-500GB on that model.
These are really nice drives, regardless of color or capacity. They don’t require drivers or an external power source, so using them is a very no-hassle experience.
The transfer rate isn’t spectacular, but this uses an industry-standard USB 2.0 connection so it’s average – obviously FireWire would be more impressive.
I’m a little worried about Chris, but I can’t tell him that because he already thinks I worry about everything. Maybe I’ll write more on that later.
It’s snowing again today. I don’t mind the snow and it’s actually very pretty to watch outside my office window. As long as the bitter cold and ice storms are behind us, I’m OK with the weather. Besides, the longer it stays cold, the longer I can dip into my endless supply of sweaters.
I found out yesterday morning that we have Monday off for Presidents Day. That was a nice surprise. I adore 3-day weekends – especially when they don’t count as vacation days!

The Super Bowl turned out to be a great game with sub-par commercials. Usually the situation is reversed, so this was a nice change of pace. The game was a nail biter regardless of who you were rooting for, with those of us rooting for the NY Giants pleasantly surprised at the final outcome with a score of 17-14. Reports indicate Super Bowl XLII was the most widely watched Super Bowl in history, and second only to the M*A*S*H series finale as the most watched TV event.
I’m not saying the commercials were bad, just not at all up to what I’ve come to expect of Super Bowl commercial campaigns.
I’ve been out late @ BrewERIE the past couple of nights – Monday night for a birthday celebration, and last night for Mardi Gras – so tonight might be a great night to stay home, do laundry, and watch a movie. Tonight’s choice will be ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. It will be the first movie I watch on my new Sharp Blu-Ray player, and although the movie isn’t Blu-Ray, the player is what’s called ‘upconverting’, meaning it will improve the quality of movies on non-Blu-Ray disks.
I’m surprised so many Republicans are backing John McCain this year. Not that I’m a big fan of the others running, but he’s fairly unimpressive as well. I’m curious about how much longer Ron Paul will stay in the race – especially given his lack of involvement in recent debates. The Democrats will obviously choose between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and both fared pretty equally on Super Tuesday although Obama came out ahead after winning more states and more delegates.
I found a new web application called Ning that allows you to create your own social networking site. I’ve created two so far, but need to go back and do some work on both of them before I can let anyone know they exist.

I woke up today with the back pain I was expecting. I could have set my watch to it, really. Typically when I do something to damage my back (ie. moving a 70lb box up a flight of stairs by myself) it’s a bit sore until the real pain kicks in about a day or so later. Now I’m in for a day or two of pain, slow walking and stiffness.
The drive to work wasn’t nearly as bad as expected after last night’s ice storm. In fact, it was much worse driving on Monday when no travel alerts were issued.
Today is appetizer day in our office. I just 
brought chips and dip so I don’t get points for originality or effort, but I don’t think anyone cares as long as they’re plenty of variety. My favorite today is Andrew’s grape jelly meatballs (see photo). Sure, this looks like an entry from ‘Don’t Eat it Steve!‘ but really, don’t laugh…they’re stupendous.
I’m planning to leave early today. The initial plan was to go see my chiropractor, but now I think I’ll go home and grab my cable box and make a trip up to Time Warner Cable and see if they have any HD boxes in stock. The Blu-Ray box is arriving today – just in time for Movie Day Saturday.
Tonight I’m hoping to see Chris and maybe a few of his buddies for some drinks to kick off the weekend. I spoke at length with his friend Dave last night, but never got a chance to really talk with Chris to find out what his plans are this weekend. I’m hoping he’s still planning to stay in Erie rather than go home to Pittsburgh. I have plans for the weekend that would be much easier to get done if he’s around.
I don’t really have a favorite for the Super Bowl this year. I suppose I will root for the NY Giants so we’ll see what happens!
