Getting caught up… June 16, 2006

I can’t believe I haven’t posted in so long. I do this sort of work for a living (create web sites, configure blogs, boards, etc.) so I suppose it’s common for your own projects to end up on the back burner.

Everything’s been going pretty well over the past few months. I feel at home in the new office. It’s really a nice atmosphere. That’s not to say it comes without its own challenges. What’s important is these are all good changes and challenges and every type of worthwhile change requires some growth (and growing pains).

One really nifty benefit to come out of this arrangement is that I’ve become closer to some people I already knew who work in the building. Even though some of the people in this building drive me nuts, I honestly really LIKE most of them. There are an awful lot of people out there in the work force who can’t say that so I consider myself very fortunate.

I also like my nice not-so-new-anymore office. This isn’t such a great photo because the office is just cramped enough to make it tough to take a good picture from INSIDE the office. Oddly, the office itself isn’t cramped at all. It’s very comfortable and large enough for me to feel at home here and have plenty of room to neatly store the stuff I need to do whatever it is I do.

Our department has also changed – for the better. Two coworkers I long considered dead weight have left and there is just no comparison between these two and their replacements. We’ve really been fortunate to find some great new talent, and an added bonus that everyone here now seems to really enjoy working with each other. We’re all terribly busy but having fun so you just can’t beat that arrangement!

Since I’m adding photos, I suppose I should add a photo of the birthday boy. Dexter is 3 years old today so it’s only fitting that he gets a special birthday wish here. This is one of my all-time favorite pictures of him because this is the day we met and he has the silliest striped legs I had ever seen.

Dexter should have been named Pester but he’s a great little boy and he’s sweet and adorable and smart and in spite of all the sleep he’s cost me, I still wouldn’t trade him for the world.

It seems the Yankees are managing to remain in the lead of the AL East, but they sure haven’t been playing anywhere near their potential, so it should be interesting to see what they can do once they are healthy and get their pitching together.

I just finished listening to ‘John Adams’ on my iPod. The book was really pretty good so I recommend it if you enjoy historical biographies. I’m also listening to Steven Covey’s ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ and I’m about to give up on it. I’ve listened to the past 5 hours and thought I was almost done and then realized I only read PART ONE of the book. There’s just no way I can listen to another 7+ hours. This is unfortunate because the content itself is useful, but it’s so dry! I haven’t heard anything in the first 5 hours that didn’t sound way too serious and antiseptic. A textbook would honestly be more fun to read. I can’t blame the narrator either because it’s the author. I find myself wondering how HE read the book aloud for so many hours and never noticed this himself!

OK, so it’s been a while… January 31, 2006

Wow, I just realized I haven’t posted here in a long time. I have been really busy with the holidays and office move and all kinds of other stuff, but I think things are starting to settle down a bit now.

It’s nice being in the new office. Everything looks great and I really like my new office. Most of all, it’s nice to be working closer with our parent company. Everyone’s been really nice to work with and helpful in getting us acclimated to the new environment. We’ve all been going to a lot of meetings so that’s been taking away from our time to get our ‘normal work’ done but it has been productive. We’re learning more about how other parts of the company operate.

Tonight I’m watching a movie on A&E about Flight 93. I don’t know if I’m up to it, to be honest. Even after four and a half years since September 11, the emotions are still pretty fresh. I’ll never understand how humans can be so hateful. Regardless of who we are or where we’re from, don’t we really all want the same things from life – healthy children, a comfortable home, and peace of mind. How foreigners could live in our country for years living amongst us, knowing us and taking advantage of everything America has to offer – all the while hating us and planning to kill us – is something my mind just can’t grasp.

I could say much much more but right now I’d rather go watch the movie. Perhaps another day I’ll explore my feelings about what happened that horrific day.
