Interesting note about innovation April 17, 2008

I thought this was a great little blurb about innovation. It’s about how we should focus on how to use our existing tools in better and more creative ways rather than worry about coming up with the next ‘killer app’.
clipped from www.howardowens.com
A common complaint in the journalism world is that newspapers aren’t innovative enough. The complaint usually goes something like, “Why didn’t a newspaper invent Google or Yahoo! or MySpace?” And then there is some finger pointing at executives for not funding R&D or being bold enough in their visions.
This “why didn’t we come up with the big idea” is one of the myths of innovation.
The problem with innovation in incumbent industries isn’t the lack of big ideas. It’s the failure to see the importance of little ideas, because they don’t point the way to immediate profits commiserate with current company values.
All innovation starts with taking a look at what tools and materials are available now and how they can be used differently. It involves finding a job to done and figuring out how to modify what’s already on the table. Or it involves, “oh, I can use that thing differently and I bet this will help other people, too.”
That was true of the light bulb, the telegraph and YouTube.

I need a break from politics October 10, 2005

I’ve always been very interested in politics, but once in a while I need a break from it all. I consider myself a conservative on a majority of the issues, but of course I base my opinions on issues individually.

I’ve never been impressed with local politics. Maybe it’s because our local politicians are buffoons. Are local politicians this bad in other areas? Almost all are unscrupulous and lack integrity and common sense.

Of course, national and world leaders aren’t necessarily any better, but I’m interested in following them anyway. Perhaps it’s because their decisions affect us all in a much more profound way. However, knowing how little I can affect change is frustrating and sometimes I just need a break. I’ve stopped watching the news and opinion shows and following political issues on the Internet and in the newspaper. Instead I’m focusing on watching movies and spending my time on other less frustrating activities.

I’ll get back into paying attention again but for now I’m already feeling happier and well-adjusted.

A little about me October 9, 2005

I suppose the friendly thing to do would be to introduce myself, but I’m not quite sure how much to divulge so I’ll just dip my toes in the water for now. I’m relatively private but also very honest so all my dirty laundry will eventually be out in the open. Just be patient. My name is Kristin. I live in northwestern Pennsylvania. I’ve lived here all my life, but I have been fortunate enough to travel a bit. I enjoy travel but never seem to have the money anymore. I’ve been thinking about saving up some cash so I can go back to NYC sometime next year – during baseball season so I can see another Yankees game.

I am attempting to get a divorce, but that’s another story for another day. I live by myself now in an apartment, but would like to find a house as soon as the divorce has been finalized. It’s actually really tough to buy a house when you’re still technically married to someone you haven’t had any contact with in years.

I live with my two cats, Hobbes and Dexter. I’m a bona fide animal lover. My own fuzzy creatures live like princes. I’d like to have a dog too once my lifestyle is more conducive to owning one. I’m sure having a house would be a good first step!

I work for an Internet marketing company that also happens to be the new media group for our local newspaper. The newspaper is actually our parent company and we’ll be moving into their offices later this year. I really enjoy my work so I’m very fortunate.

I should also mention a few hobbies to break the ice. I have been a computer geek since I was 11. I love learning about new technologies and there’s always something new to learn. Lately I’ve been working on learning more about blogs, RSS, iPods and podcasting. I just set up my first fantasy hockey team and have no clue where to start but I have to start somewhere. I know much more about baseball but thought I’d try hockey for now since the season is just beginning.

I love learning about a variety of subjects. I am very interested particularly in learning about history, politics, photography and cooking. I am considered a bit of a trivia nut when it comes to pop culture and history and sports. I like to read, watch movies, listen to music, putter on my PC, and ride my mountain bike. I enjoy going out for beers and conversation, but can be just as content to stay home and watch a movie. I like people quite a bit, but I suppose I’m really more of a loner.

I date occasionally but I haven’t met anyone I’d really like to date long-term, unfortunately. I definitely wouldn’t be with someone just to have someone in my life though so that’s OK.

Well, I suppose I’ve shared enough for one post. I hope to be able to grab and maintain some interest in this blog as time passes because I really enjoy writing!
